We installed these new Oakridge Energy Star Rated shingles from Owens Corning in Shasta White on a house in Lakewood, Colorado, in the Fall of 2017. Why Energy Star Rated shingles?
For one, they’re different. Currently, few homes have white roofs, let alone Energy Star Rated. Most homes have some shade of brown, tan or gray. Having a white roof will stand-out. What’s more, these are Energy Star Rated shingles. This means they help keep your house cool better than traditional colors. White reflects heat away from your roof. Of course, having a ‘cool roof’ is only part of many things you, as a homeowner, can do to lower your Summer cooling bill. Adequate attic insulation and venting, energy efficient windows, are good places to start. Did you know we can also help with attic insulation and venting? Contact us for a free estimate.
We install a ton of Owens Corning shingles and are a Platinum contractor with them. This allows us to offer our customers extended warranty coverage that other companies in the area simply can’t. Owens Corning isn’t the only asphalt shingle we offer. We also install GAF, CertainTeed, Malarkey, and Tamko. Owens Corning is, however, the only asphalt shingle manufacturer, as of the time of this writing, that offers Energy Star Rated shingles in our area. CertainTeed’s Solaris line of asphalt shingles, such as their Landmark, Presidential, and Presidential TL, are Cool Roofing Rating Council (CRRC) rated, and used to be available to us, but they currently are not. We hope CertainTeed will change this soon.
TAMKO’s Heritage® series asphalt shingles in Glacier White and Elite Glass-Seal® 3-Tab asphalt shingles in White and Glacier White are Energy Star Rated. However, as of the time of this writing, they aren’t available to use. Visit the Tamko website or contact us to see if they’re available in your area. It’s the same story with GAF. Their Timberline HDZ shingles in white are CRRC-rated (Cool Roofing Rating Council), but are not available to us in Northern Colorado. Visit their website and enter your zip code to see if they’re available in your area. These architectural/dimensions shingles have a wood shake look and have a 130 mph wind warranty. They are not, however, impact rated.
If saving money on your Summer cooling bill is of interest to you, and keeping more waste out of the landfill, check-out Boral’s Barrel-Vault Tile in Dover (white). These high-barrel Spanish tiles are stone-coated, just like traditional asphalt shingles, but their foundation is metal instead of asphalt. This means they last a lot longer than traditional asphalt shingles because they are stronger. What’s more, their solar reflectivity is significantly higher than asphalt shingles at around .40 versus around 20. They do cost more, initially, however. But most folks end-up saving money in the long run because they last so much longer than asphalt shingles. For the coolest roof material in Colorado, check-out of Flatiron Steel’s sheet metal roofing products. Thanks to Valspar paints, they are all Energy Star Rated.
