Cost and Longevity
People want a traditional shingle roof because they’re cheap to install. They costs about a third as much as a standing seam roof, initially. However, they also last a third as long, if not less. Most shingle roofs only last 15-25 years. A new metal roof, on the other hand, often lasts 70 years or more. As a result, a new metal roof often ends-up costing less in the long run.
Cool Home
As of the time of this writing, it’s October and it’s 90º outside in Northern Colorado. That’s not normal. We can expect this warming trend to continue. Do you want to be under a roof that reflects the most heat and releases as much absorbed heat as possible? If so, you want a sheet metal roof. A standing seam roof reflects much more heat than even a white asphalt shingle roof. In fact, the temperature inside your attic under metal panel roof such as standing seam is about 20º cooler compared to a typical roof. As a result, you’ll spend less on your summer utility bill.
Durable
Luxury and architectural shingles usually last up to 25 or 30 years, depending upon hail, installation, etc. Usually, here in Colorado, they don’t last that long. We have removed shingle roofs that were older than 50 years, but they should have been removed a lot sooner as the roof was leaking. Usually, the longest-lasting shingles only last 25 years at the most. This is because they aren’t that durable.
As asphalt shingle roofs age, it’s normal for them to loose their granules, not only from hail, but from normal aging. After all, the asphalt used to hold the granules in place dries-out over time. The granules are asphalt shingle’s first line of defense against harmful UV rays. When they’re gone, your roof is vulnerable to leaks. Traditional shingles are also prone to curling and splitting or cracking. This is because they dry-out over time. Another common problem with traditional shingles is that they don’t hold-up well to strong winds. We are regularly patching asphalt shingle roofs that have missing shingles. They also aren’t nearly as resistant as sheet metal roofs to strong winds, heavy snow, fluctuating temperatures, and more.
However, a professionaly installed standing seam metal roof should easily last 70 years or more. That’s 3 times as long as traditional shingles. That’s because standing seam is much more durable and resistant to UV rays, hail, strong winds, heavy snow, driving rain, insects, mold, and more.
Recyclability
Asphalt shingles are not recyclable in our area. When we tear-off an old shingle roof, it’s goes straight to the landfill. There’s no where else to go with it. An old metal roof, on the other hand, is recyclable and we take that to the nearest metal recycling center, unless otherwise requested by our customer. With a metal roof, it’s one less thing that goes in the landfill.
Switch to a Standing Seam Roof
If it’s time for a new roof, switching to a standing seam metal roof is a smart move if you plan on staying in your current home for a while, as you’ll be able to enjoy it’s cooling, energy and money-saving benefits. How much money you’ll save really depends upon your over-all home efficiency, such as if you also have energy-efficient windows, etc. When you have a sheet metal roof, you’ll rest easier when the next strong winds blow in, or the next hail storm comes around because your new standing seam metal roof will resist it better.
