New Metal Roof for Bellvue Home

August 30, 2019

a new standing seam metal roof on a house

The owner of Rogers Construction needed a new roof for his new home in Bellvue, Colorado. Bellvue is a small unincorporated agricultural community. It’s located in Pleasant Valley near Fort Collins, Colorado, and the mouth of the Poudre Canyon. We regularly install roofs for Rogers Construction, so when they needed a new roof for their house, we were an obvious choice.

They chose a metal roof instead of shingles or tile for its classic Colorado mountain-home look. We installed 3200 square feet of 24-gauge Nail Strip standing seam metal roofing panels from Flatiron Steel, in CMG’s medium bronze color. Flatiron Steel rolled-formed the metal roofing panels on the job site and cut them to the exact lengths we needed. This was a huge help, as we didn’t have to bring a trailer all the way to the job site.

Benefits of a Standing Seam Roof

Durability

There are many benefits to a new standing seam metal roof in Colorado. The primary one being durability. Standing seam metal roofs are more durable than other roofs. Take traditional asphalt shingles, for example. They have a foundation of fiberglass.

Fiberglass isn’t nearly as durable as metal. Standing seam metal lasts longer because it’s more resistant to agents, such as hail, mold, and rot. As a result, metal is simply more durable than asphalt shingles. The owner of Rogers Construction won’t have to replace his new metal roof in Bellvue for at least 70 years, probably more.

Affordability

Standing seam metal roofs are also more affordable, long-term, than most other roofs. Because asphalt shingles aren’t as durable as a metal roof, they don’t last as long. Mid-grade asphalt shingles typically last between 15 and 25 years. Metal roofing, on the other hand, will last 70 years or more. You’ll go through three asphalt shingle roofs or more before you replace one metal roof.

Recyclability

Metal roofs are also recyclable, unlike fiberglass and asphalt shingles. Although Owens Corning offers a recycling program, it’s not available to us in Colorado. However, we’ve identified multiple metal recycling facilities all along the Colorado Front Range, including Greeley, Fort Collins, and Denver. When we tear off a metal roof, whether it’s a standing seam metal or stone-coated steel shingles, we do our best to take that old metal roof to one of these recycling centers.

Energy Efficiency

Standing seam metal roofs are also the coolest, most energy-efficient roofs for Colorado. It comes down to which roof reflects more heat and which releases more absorbed heat. On a scale of 0 to 100, traditional asphalt shingles have a solar reflectivity value of only 15, even white shingles.

Standing seam metal roofs, on the other hand, have a solar reflectivity value of 67! They both release absorbed heat at about the same rate. What does this mean? It means you spend less on cooling your home during the summer. It means your attic is cooler. For the owners of this new metal roof in Bellvue, their home will be cooler than those without a standing seam metal roof.
